Our dear little Chica November 2004 - August 16,2015 2:30 pm

The last minutes with Chica

She walked in a little faster when she heard Allison's voice. We sat on the floor at the emergency vet's office on a flowery comforter, the 3 of us, alone.  She breathed a little hard like she has been doing.  Her body looked slimmer, there was less fluid after the morning tests and procedures that concluded that there was nothing more to do.  Hemangiosarcoma of the heart.  An old dog tumor, rapidly growing.  She was very calm and made soft sigh sounds while we rubbed her head and her back.  She didn't much look at the tennis ball I brought her.  I said goodbye for Marlena, Olivia, Angela, Ben, Leslie, Baby Cha-cha, Aga, Jerry and Carol, the Goga's, Mehrdad, Tony, Amy,Jane and all the people who loved her.  She looked in our eyes and listened.   I thanked her for keeping us safe and keeping our children safe.  I told her to keep chasing" pacoons "and that I would put her picture up to remind the "pacoons " that she was still there.  I told her that she will always be there in the yard to play ball with, to go to the creek with, to pick blackberries with, to  pass and remind us how good things were.   The word I said that got her attention most was "go."  I told her we were going to "go" and she was coming with us.  Her eyes told me  that she wanted that the most.  The doctor came in, we talked faster to her now  and looked her in the eyes to distract her from the IV, the syringe, the infusion.  We said everything one last time and then she shifted her body, woozily lay back and put her head on Allison's lap, looked up at her and took her last full breath.  Her eyes stayed open, looking up to Allison.  And then we got to "go", together, with her in our arms.
